Window treatments can make or break a room, and window blinds are one of the most affordable options.

You can make your vertical blinds or mini blinds even more affordable by installing them yourself, and it’s a lot easier to do than you might think.

Window blinds can be installed in an inside or outside mount depending on your windows and the style you’re looking for.

Installing your own window blinds is not a difficult project.Equipment List

To install your window blinds, you’ll need:

  • Blinds
  • Brackets
  • A ladder
  • A level
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdrivers
  • Screws

Prep Work

  • Remove your current window treatments and fill any exposed holes with joint compound or spackling.
  • You may also need to touch up the paint if it will show around the new window blinds.

Installing an Outside Mount Window Blind

  • Measure the windows. You will need to go about three inches past each side and allow sufficient space above the window for the mounting bracket. You may also want to extend below the bottom of the window to make it look symmetrical.
  • Screw the left and right side brackets into the walls at the desired height above the window. Always double check with a level to make sure that the blinds will hang straight.
  • Check the blinds to make sure they are not tangled and will hang straight. Install the head rail by snapping it into place on the brackets. Close the bracket covers if provided with your model.
  • If you have a valance, install the clips according to the directions, and then insert the valance into them. Note that some models may require the valance may need to be installed before the head rail.

Installing an Inside Mount Window Blind

  • Measure the height and width of the window in three places and use the narrowest of the three measurements.
  • Install the brackets on the jambs inside the casing. Always double check with a level to make sure that the blinds will hang straight.
  • Check the blinds to make sure they are not tangled and will hang straight. Install the head rail by snapping it into place on the brackets. Close the bracket covers if provided with your model.
  • If you have a valance, install the clips according to the directions, and then insert the valance into them. Note that some models may require the valance may need to be installed before the head rail.
